Algorhythm - Season 1

E01: Pilot

Linus is a monotonous office drone, and a former noisecore musician. Years ago, in an
 attempt to make a hit record, he developed an algorithm that could predict which songs
 would be pop chart hits, but before he could finish his album a major tech company bought
 his algorithm and brought him on as an employee. Now he works from home, never leaving
 the house, depressed and unable to make music. His wife, Melissa, is happy and content,
 and Linus resents her for it. And then unexpectedly Linus’ employer tells him that the
 algorithm is no longer making the cut. Other companies have better algorithms, and his can
 predict hits, but never a number one hit. He has six weeks to fix his algorithm and come up
 with a number one hit or he’s fired. Meanwhile, Linus neighbor Reid just quit his band for
 “selling out” after they agreed to open for Maroon 5. Reid maintains it’s all about the art and
 his girlfriend leaves him for his egotistical attitude. Now, depressed, he realizes he needs to
 go a bit more mainstream to try to get a number one hit to win his ex back. Linus and Reid
 realize they can use each other to make that number one hit. Linus can provide the
 commercially successful angle, while Reid can provide the human side, and they begin to
 work together to try to make that number one hit that will save both of them.

E02: Song of the Summer

Reid and Linus try to make the perfect Summer song about having fun in the sun, so they
 invite a number of people over to Linus’ house so Linus can analyze why people have fun
 during an epic summer pool party. Reid realizes he can invite his ex, so he agrees to this,
 even though he thinks summer songs are stupid. During the party Linus keeps dryly insisting
 he’s having a great time, pointing out the various fun things they are doing, and how this will
 make the perfect summer party song, but then has actual fun when he sees some people
 playing Settlers of Catan on a floaty in the pool. Reid sees his ex play chicken with another
 man and gets insanely jealous, jumping on Linus shoulders to try to play too, only to realize
 that she’s hanging out with her cousin. In the end the summer song they create has lyrics all
 about jealousy, heartbreak and Settlers of Catan specifics.

E03: Teen Angst

Nostalgic for Dashboard Confessional, Reid and Linus want to write a song that captures the
 overwrought angst of the modern teenager. Problem is, they’re old. Linus meets up with his
 teenage nephew who attends a fancy private school, but just can’t relate to his teenager
 problems and keeps shutting them down or solving them: “No one asked me to prom.” “That
 doesn’t matter at all.” “I like this girl but I don’t know if she likes me.” “Well then call her? This
 can’t seriously be what you’re worried about?!” Meanwhile Reid returns to his old public high
 school and discovers that teenagers are living WAY faster and harder than he ever did and
 the pressures they face are insane. He meets one girl who was Internet bullied so bad she
 had to transfer to a new school because of death threats. One girl is pining for unrequited
 love, but it’s with her history teacher who she used to sleep with. A bunch of them have been
 in rehab. Reid gets caught up in a drug ring within the school and realizes maybe it’s for the
 best that his teenage years are behind him.

E04: Dance Song

Decide to start the next dance craze like the Macarena. They decide to make up some
 nonsense word for the chorus since no one knows what the actual lyrics are to Macarena. As
 for the accompanying dance, they come up with something simple yet satisfying: “Point at
 things you like.” “Point at things you don’t like. Now say your name!" Linus and Reid crash a
 wedding (where Reid's ex-girlfriend is a guest) and the dance surprisingly catches on. But
 when Reid's ex-girlfriend accidentally points at Reid, Linus misreads it and takes over on the
 microphone with new instructions like "now kiss your ex-boyfriend." But when the inebriated
 bride kisses her ex-boyfriend following the new instructions in the song, a large fight breaks
 out and the wedding is ruined, and everyone hates Linus and Reid.

E05: EDM

Analyzing some of the most popular songs of the past few years, there's a ton of EDM. And
 since most songs just have a ramping of electronic sounding beats and one sentence
 repeated over and over, Linus decides all they need a generic dance beat and THE BEST
 SENTENCE THEY CAN THINK OF. Reid is totally against this idea because he firmly
 believes all EDM isn't music. But Linus convinced Reid to give it a shot, and do some
 research at a warehouse nightclub. Linus asks everyone for their favorite sentences,
 discovering that most of the folks he's talking to are completely high on ecstasy. Reid gets
 caught talking to a woman who looks a lot like his ex-gf, but as they talk more and more, he
 gets into the spirit of the warehouse party, and it becomes clear he LOVES the party and
 EDM, but still refuses to admit it.

E06: Finale

After trying desperately to make a hit record, Linus realizes he won't do it in time and tells
 Reid that they have to give up. But when the two separate, Linus overhears Reid singing a
 beautiful and touching ballad about giving up on your dreams. They quickly record it and put
 it into the algorithm, but the algorithm gives it an F. Linus finally sees that his precious
 algorithm can't account for a certain human element that great music has.

Reid lost his girlfriend. Linus is about to lose his house. This moody musician and mousy coder have nothing in common, except that creating a hit song will solve both of their problems. Can music meet mathematics and save these two unlikely allies?
